Chapter 23
Although there was a steady stream of customers that day, Sally took care of the store while Becky mentally prepared for the meeting with Eva. She knew that her own path of discovery might just lead the way and she continued to think about the past and how she had learned to be a medium.
She suddenly recalled that after the visit with Debdatta that day so long ago, she was not completely satisfied when she returned to the antique store. She knew she needed more. She was not sure what questions she would need to ask ghosts or how to get them to the other side. Then, as she closed the shop for the evening, a ghost stood outside waiting for her. His unexpected presence startled her but she nodded and said, "Good evening. How are you?"
"It is a lovely evening," he commented. "I am fine and I appreciate you taking time to talk to me."
Becky smiled again and said, "Well, I am new at this and I am not sure how to help you, but I can spend a few minutes with you."
"You are the new medium," he replied, "perhaps I can be the one to help you."
That got her attention. She certainly needed help but she was also aware of the passerby's curious stares as she stood in front of the store. Once again, it appeared as if she was talking to herself.
"Will you please come inside with me," Becky asked and then introduced herself.
"It is nice to meet you, Becky Tibbs," the ghost said as he tipped his hat, "I am Benjamin, and yes, we should take this conversation inside."
Once inside, Benjamin educated Becky on many ghost-related topics. He explained that with most spirits, especially the young, they saw the light of the other side and went towards it. It was an instinctual course of action to return to the light and home. He told her that some ghosts immediately saw their loved ones and joyfully went with them. He clarified that some spirits were afraid of judgment and lingered on this plane.
He described the many different signs that let the living know that a ghost was present. He told her that some ghosts could not cross over while they had earthly matters on their minds. He called it 'unfinished business' and explained that with those ghosts, she might be required to help them.
Her help might involve giving a message to a loved one or doing some physical task that spirits were unable to achieve. He explained about angry ghosts, stating that they grew upset when ignored and they could not find anyone willing to help them. He also explained that even after they had found a resolution, she might be required to call down the light for them. Then he told her how to do that.
"Ghosts are more likely to contact their living relatives very soon after their deaths. It is a good idea to ask those you will help if anyone has recently died," he advised.
